Dr. Nelson S. Gwinn, III is a board-certified cardiologist with over three decades of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. He has been a dedicated member of Southeast Cardiology Clinic since 1991, providing expert care to patients across the Wiregrass region.
A native of South Carolina, Dr. Gwinn earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Wake Forest University, graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he was recognized with multiple honors, including the Spring Medical Scholarship and awards in Medicine and Psychiatry. He completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Bowman Gray School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the Medical University of South Carolina. He later pursued an Integrative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Gwinn is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with Board Certification in Cardiovascular Diseases. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention (FSCI). His hospital affiliations include Southeast Alabama Medical Center, where he previously served as Director of Cardiology (1993–2016), Chairman of the Ethics Committee, and a member of the Credentials Committee.
An active participant in professional and community organizations, Dr. Gwinn has been involved with the American Heart Association, the American Medical Association, and the Southern Medical Association, among others. Beyond medicine, he has been deeply committed to youth development and community service through the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Chairman, and a member of the Alabama–Florida Council Board.
Dr. Gwinn has contributed to several peer-reviewed publications in leading medical journals, including The American Heart Journal and The American Journal of Cardiology. His research has focused on topics such as coronary artery disease, graft failure, and cardiac pacing.
Outside of his clinical and academic work, Dr. Gwinn enjoys spending time with his family and contributing to civic and charitable organizations such as the SAMC Foundation Board, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Templar Eye Foundation.
